Elephant Orphanage Udawalawe

The Udawalawe Elephant Transit Home is often called the “Elephant Orphanage Udawalawe” by visitors. It is a world-renowned elephant rehabilitation center that cares for orphaned and injured baby elephants before releasing them back into the wild.

Located near Udawalawe National Park, the center was established to provide rescued elephant calves with veterinary care, nutrition, and protection while minimizing human contact. This conservation-focused approach helps elephants develop natural behaviors and successfully return to their natural habitat.

Elephant Orphanage Udawalawe

Unlike traditional elephant orphanages, visitors cannot touch, feed, or ride elephants. Instead, guests observe the calves from a viewing platform during feeding times, creating a more ethical wildlife experience.

Udawalawe Transit Home entrance fees are approximately $10–$15 per adult, with additional charges for children, vehicles, and a VAT. Safari prices vary depending on the duration and group size.
