Udawalawa Elephants Transit Home

The Department of Wildlife Conservation founded the Udawalawe Elephant Transit Home (ETH) in 1995 near Udawalawe National Park to protect and care for orphaned and abandoned elephant calves. It is home to around 52 rescued elephants between the ages of 1 – 6 years.

Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage is located in Kegalle, between Colombo and Kandy. The Sri Lanka Wildlife Department established the orphanage in 1975 on a 25-acre coconut plantation beside the Maha Oya River. The orphanage provides care, protection, and rehabilitation for orphaned, abandoned, and injured elephants rescued from different parts of Sri Lanka.
